The Couvent Collective will be the first community-focused financial institution and digital resource center dedicated to supporting woman-owned and underserved manufacturing and logistics businesses in New Orleans and Atlanta. We will provide innovative financing solutions, grant resources, and technical assistance to drive equitable economic development.
Empowering Manufacturing and Logistics for a Brighter Future.
The Couvent Collective champions sustainable growth in underserved communities by bridging the financial gap for businesses in manufacturing and logistics. Our mission is to foster economic resilience, job creation, and equal opportunity for all.
Last will and testament, recorded on November 12, 1832: “I bequeath and order that my land at the corner of Grands Hommes and Union streets [now Dauphine and Touro] be dedicated and used in perpetuity for the establishment of a free school for the colored orphans of the district of Marigny.”
Despite our efforts, the Archdiocese of New Orleans chose to sell the land to developers for a mixed-use building. This decision directly conflicts with Marie Couvent's expressed wish that the land be used in perpetuity to serve the educational needs of the community. While we are saddened by this outcome, we remain steadfast in our mission to honor her legacy through our work and programs, which are centered on community development, education, and empowerment.
We focus on three main pillars to carry forward her mission: Business Workshops and Mentorship, Community Engagement, and Entrepreneurial Support. Through these initiatives, we aim to empower women, minority-owned businesses, and underserved communities by providing access to essential resources, business development support, and opportunities for economic growth.
Our efforts are dedicated to creating a space where the spirit of Marie Couvent’s gift lives on, uplifting and empowering future generations.

Marie Justine Cirnaire Couvent, a remarkable free woman of color born in West Africa, dedicated her life to empowering others through education. She was the founding benefactor of one of the oldest black Catholic schools in the United States. After gaining her freedom and becoming a successful entrepreneur in New Orleans, she bequeathed her property to establish a school for African American orphans in 1837. Her visionary spirit and commitment to education created a legacy that continues to inspire us today. At The Couvent Collective, we honor her impact by carrying forward her mission of community empowerment, supporting underserved entrepreneurs, and fostering economic growth in the communities we serve.
